Alex jumped when he heard the man's voice. He immediately raised his rifle and placed himself between the stranger and Anna. Virgil ran to his master's side and snarled at the newcomer. Teeth bared, and hair on end, Virgil waited to his master to give the word. Alex, staring down the rifle's long sights at the stranger, spoke. "Who the hell are you?"

Anna whimpered and stayed behind Alex, trying not to feel afraid, trying to be brave, but she just couldn't manage to be strong under his scrutinizing gaze. She backed up a little and straightened her back, glaring at him. "I ain't goin' home! It's not where I wanna be!" She shook her head, almost whimpering again. Images of the men in Kohl's army going through her mind. Some of the bigger men, they scared her so much and their leering faces would be burned in her for a very long time. Thoughts of the last time Caleb had caught up to her played through her mind and her shoulders slumped. "I ain't goin' back to that."

Caleb faked a pout. Ignoring the man with the gun. Guns didn't scare Caleb. Guns didn't kill him. He's a vampire after all. Sure teh bullets hurt. But that's a bout it. But Annabell. You're daddy sent me to get you. Khol misses you. he said as he took a few stepps closer to them. Oh he wished he could just drain her a be done with it. This little bitch has caused him too much trouble all ready! His eyes flashed a menacing red.

Alex watched as the stranger approached. He wondered what the man meant in referring to Kohl as "Daddy". As quickly as the thought entered his mind, Alex cast it aside. It wasn't relevant. All that mattered was that the stranger was one of Kohl's men and he was threatening Anna. That was all Alex needed to know. He aimed his rifle straight at the stranger's heart. "Nice meeting you." Alex pulled the trigger.

Anna tensed, clapping her hands to her ears. The report was loud, echoing off the abandoned buildings and ringing in her ears. She shook her head and pushed her powers in the direction of Caleb. She wasn't sure if it would work, but maybe she would be lucky, maybe she could use her magic now.
She felt it surge up inside her, and then falter. She felt her eyes well up. "I don't want to go back!" Anna yelled and pushed again, feeling the ripple of power push out of her and push at Caleb hard.

He dodged to the right, using his inhuman speed when Alex pulled the trigger. Caleb felt the sting of the bullet hit his left shoulder and he grunted in pain. As he straightened he felt the intrusion of some outside magikal force. He looked to Anna and narrowed his eyes. He felt her powers trying to push him back, and they were surprisingly strong for a girl who previously showed no more than an inkling of magic. The force of it pushed him back a few inches before his shock wore off and he pushed back with his own power. Caleb began pushing against her own magical force with his, which was much stronger, and tried to force her towards the wall. Maybe if he pinned her then he could take care of this insolent little man. I really don't like it when people shoot me. He growled at the man defending his target. He lunged for the man, fangs bared.

Alex couldn't believe how quickly the stranger had moved. When the man spoke, Alex saw his fangs and cold chill ran down his spine. Alex hadn't had dealings with many vampires in the past. He'd usually tried to avoid crossing their path. The few times that Alex had encountered them, he'd barely escaped with his life. His heart racing, everything seemed to be moving in slow-motion. He saw the stranger's muscles tense and knew that he was preparing to strike. Alex steeled himself against his fear. Vampire or not, he wasn't going to allow the girl to be harmed. The stranger lunged for him. Alex quickly sidestepped the strike and swung his rifle around hard, striking the base the vampire's skull. Such a blow would be fatal to an ordinary man. Vampires, however, were far from ordinary. The blow rendered the stranger unconscious but Alex knew that wouldn't last long. Alex shouldered his rifle and drew his pistol. He placed the barrel on the back of the vampire's head. "Goodbye." Alex hissed. Just as he started to put pressure on the trigger, a voice rang out in the distance. "There she is! Get her!" Alex looked up and saw three men, each brandishing automatic weapons, charging down the alleyway at them. Alex raised his weapon and fired off a few rounds before grabbing Anna's hand and bolted.
After what seemed like an eternity of running through back alley corridors and narrow side-streets, Alex was sure that he'd lost their pursuers. Though they were safe, he swore in frustration. Kohl's men never travel alone. That fact alone saved the vampire. Alex wondered if the fates were taunting him by robbing him of the kill, but that really didn't matter. They were still alive and that was all he cared about. He knew that his hideout wasn't far now. He just hoped that they wouldn't run in to any more trouble.
